Local onion producers are concerned about the situation on the Ukrainian market. Demand for goods is relatively stable for a month, but competition with imported products is quite fierce, analysts at the Ukrainian Fruit and Vegetable Association (UPRA) said.
According to the UPRA monitoring, stagnation of onion prices has been observed for several weeks. At this time, onions can be bought at a price of 10-14 UAH / kg, which is equivalent to $ 0.37-0.52 per kg, depending on quality. Minimum prices are maintained for low quality vegetables.
Imported and high-quality local goods have a higher cost. As farmers say, the situation with prices for onions is associated with the decision of buyers to reduce the volume of purchases. So, retail chains buy onions in small quantities only for the current sale, explaining this by the low quality of the onion and the short time for its sale. Unrealized imported onions in large volumes accumulated in the warehouses of importers.
This is alarming for farmers who, until the last moment, have been restrained from selling onions, waiting for an opportunity to sell them at a high price. Their vegetable stores also accumulated a lot of stale goods, which they may not have time to sell before the end of the season, taking into account the suspension of exports.
