Employees of food and consumer control managed to prevent the Mediterranean fly, tropical weed and dangerous moths from entering Ukraine and “infecting” local lands with incredibly dangerous pests.
We are talking about quarantine organisms that were found in containers with imported goods from Turkey and Argentina.
“We carried out a standard phytocontrol procedure for tobacco raw materials,” representatives of the department say. - We examined the cargo weighing more than 20 tons, which arrived at the Odessa port from Argentina. And they were very surprised when they saw ivy morning glory among tobacco. ”
The American tropics are considered to be the source of this weed, but today Ipomoea is common in Europe and Asia. Thin three-meter stems of ivy morning glory braid other plants, preventing them from growing and developing.
“Most often, morning glory seeds are imported by importers along with corn or soybeans, or in containers with products from these crops,” the food and consumer service said. “Now they brought in tobacco.”

“We had to return almost four and a half tons of tomatoes to Turkey, as experts found representatives of tomato moths in foreign deliveries,” state controllers say. And they add that the second name of such a moth is that of the absolute. It has the property of massively multiplying and, not having natural opponents in the unusual habitat, it poses a serious threat to farmers and their land.
In addition to tomato moth, another “surprise” was brought from Turkey - the Mediterranean fruit fly, which was hooked into containers with pomegranates. 20 tons of goods had to be detained and carefully checked, because if such a fly makes its way into Ukrainian gardens and kitchen gardens, it is just right to wait for trouble.
“Fighting the Mediterranean fly is very difficult, and it does incredible damage,” agronomists say. - The larvae of such a fly can damage the fruits of the order of two hundred species of crops. The habitat of such flies is the countries of Africa, America and Australia. An adult fruit fly can move around the planet in different modes of transport, having the ability to do without food for about 7-8 days. "
