Dogwood is a niche culture and trend of Ukrainian berry cultivation, according to a representative of the experimental station for pomology named after Simirenko Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences of Ukraine Evgeny Postolenko.
According to him, dogwood is easy to grow and gives a stable yield without reference to the frequency of fruiting.
Dogwood is a valuable crop for processing: its berries contain a large amount of vitamin C and polyphenolic compounds. In addition to the food industry, dogwood is also used in pharmaceuticals. This crop is ideal for organic cultivation. Dogwood is not affected by pests, so there is no need for chemicals against them. The plant can become infected with powdery mildew and spotting, but this happens very rarely, encourages Evgeny Postolenko. The State Register of Varieties suitable for distribution in Ukraine includes 16 dogwood varieties. Most of them were bred by employees of the National Botanical Garden. N.N. Grishka. For commercial cultivation, Evgeny Postolenko advises farmers to plant a garden of five to six varieties of dogwood with different ripening dates.
