According to scientists from the I.I. Institute of Zoology The reason for this is a change in the climatic conditions of Ukraine towards warming.
It is not difficult to determine the pest: the striped slug and the reticular slug partially or completely lack a shell. In recent years, they have become very common throughout Ukraine, which has contributed to climate change. Summer has now become warm and humid, and these are ideal conditions for the reproduction of mollusks.
Usually, overwintered slugs begin to appear among young grass with the onset of May, but this year they can begin to attack home gardens in April, said Tatyana Danilkova, the head of the forecasting, phytosanitary diagnostics and risk analysis department of the regional department of the State Food and Beverage Service. There will be fewer pests in those areas that were well cleaned in the fall and do not contain large accumulations of moist trees and leaves. If there are such debris deposits, they must be removed before planting, explains Anna Tkalenko, candidate of agricultural sciences at the Institute of Plant Protection of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine
To protect plants from slugs, weeds should be weed out not only on the site itself, but also on the side of the road. It is undesirable to leave plant debris, as slugs lay eggs in them, Anna Tkalenko advises.
