Irish Minister of Agriculture Michael Creed rejected the idea that Ireland would produce enough vegetables and grain to supply the country.
At the same time, the Minister firmly supported the beef and dairy sectors, but warned that farmers would have to contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
“There is a point of view with which I fundamentally disagree that we should put aside beef and force all these farmers to grow potatoes and carrots. This is blind ignorance, ”said Minister Creed.
In Ireland, since 2008, the area under cultivation for major crops has decreased by 67,500 ha, which represents a decrease of more than 20%.
Mark Brown, chairman of the Irish Farmers Association (IFA Grain) grain sector, said: “The sector is in serious decline, and all stakeholders need a coordinated approach to stabilize it. This harsh reality confirms that tillage should be seen as a vulnerable sector in Irish agriculture. ”
Unlike the grain sector, the dairy sector in Ireland continues to expand, and it is forecasted that this year milk supplies will increase by 300 million liters, resulting in a total production of more than 7.8 billion liters.
