China plans to allow imports of Brazilian meat after top-level talks scheduled for May, said Chinese Ambassador to Brazil, Yang Wangming.
At the same time, the ambassador declined to comment on how many meat processing plants can be approved for export to China, but said that this issue will be discussed during the May visit of Brazilian Agriculture Minister Teresa Cristina Diaz to China.
According to the ambassador, new export permits may be announced after Brazil's vice president Hamilton Murao visits Beijing later that month.“We believe that thanks to the cooperation of the ministries of agriculture and quality control departments of both countries, more Brazilian agricultural and livestock products can be imported into the Chinese market,” said Yang Wangming. The potential increase in Brazilian meat exports to China is due to analysts warning that negotiations between the US and China to ease trade tensions could weaken demand for Brazilian soybeans.
Brazil is the world's largest exporter of soy and beef. Chinese purchases rose sharply after an Asian country imposed duties on US soybeans in response to other tariffs announced by President Donald Trump.
