The number of these farm animals in Ukraine is likely to fall to a new low this year. At least, analyst Andrei Pankratov of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) believes so.
The expert predicts that the number of pigs will be reduced by at least 4% to 5.8 million. According to his estimates, the total meat production will be about 2.53 million tons. This is 5% higher than the previous year’s meat production.
Of these, about 1.38 million tons will be chicken, 618 thousand tons will account for pork, 287 thousand tons for beef and 251 thousand tons for other types of meat.
The weight of adult pigs is 50-150 kg.
The expert estimates the total domestic consumption of meat at 2.2 million tons, which corresponds to an increase of about 2%. Meanwhile, Ukraine probably exported more meat than ever before, namely about 472 thousand tons.
Against the backdrop of a raging ASF epidemic that has swept almost the whole world, such a reduction in the number of pigs does not raise questions. Recall that the first outbreak of the disease this year was recently reported by Bulgaria, where ASF was detected at a large industrial pig farm.
- In Russia, a discussion of the epizootic situation in ASF and the causes of its outbreaks in the country took place.
- Earlier we wrote that in the north of North Sumatra, Indonesia, more than 4 thousand pigs died due to outbreaks of ASF.
- In western Poland, veterinary authorities have confirmed further results of a wild boar ASF study.
- The veterinary authorities of Poland, confirmed that in the province of Lebus, another wild boar infected with ASF was discovered.
- As African swine fever spreads across many Asian and European countries, pig owners in New Zealand are vigilant about biological protection.
