In 2019, and what, then, should the farmers do and how should they protect their crops?
Ukraine is at the forefront of climate change. In June of this year, the temperature during the day was around + 35 ° C. Even 30 years ago, such a prolonged heat this month would be a shock. But now such records are becoming regular. June 2019 in Kiev became the hottest in almost 150 years - since the beginning of observations in 1881.
The average monthly air temperature in the capital was + 23.6 ° С, which is 5.4 ° С higher than the climatic norm. Such data are observations of a weather station of the Central Geophysical Observatory named after Boris Sreznevsky.
For a month, 14 days were recorded with temperatures above + 30 ° C. Forecasters immediately recorded 11 temperature records. For 6 months of the year, the deviation of air temperature from the climatic norm was 3.2 ° C.
In our country, global warming is showing its manifestations faster than in other places. The threat to farming is that the heat madly dries Ukrainian chernozems, they critically lack moisture. Even the most hardy cultures are not able to fully develop in such conditions.
“On the territory of Ukraine, the average annual temperature rises even faster than the global average,” says Nikolai Kulbida, director of the Ukrhydromettsentr. If it rains, it is only during hurricanes, doing more harm than good.
The world breaks temperature records. Experts fear that high temperatures will cause the death of hundreds and even thousands of people. They recall that in 2003 the heat killed 70 thousand Europeans. And in 2018, about 1 thousand people died in Germany.
Fatal heat creates global challenges for farming. Experts believe that only new agricultural technologies will save agriculture.
